Has to be amongst the most colourful of the smaller birds to visit our gardens. Niger seed being the secret of attraction, and quite often dandelions and especially thistles if you let them go to seed.

Most often the Goldfinches come in pairs or small groups

How to spot them - Sometimes alone, but mostly they will visit a garden as a pair, or in small groups, especially if you have Niger seed in a Niger seed bird feeder which has a smaller hole to release seeds that are so small. You can also see flocks of these birds feeding on gorse bushes, and the give away for their presence is the collective chatter as they fly..

Photography Tip - When in larger groups, and if the sunlight is in the right place, take the opportunity to use a telephoto lens and take as many shots as possible into the bushes.

Whose a pretty boy !!!

The Goldfinch is without doubt one of the most colourful and easy to see of Finch family of birds. If you want them in the garden, then try to get a feeder and some Niger Seed, they love it.

Hide and Seek

Once the leaves are out in springtime, and where there is green on the bark of tree branches, birds can be quite difficult to spot, and very hard to photograph. But thought I would add this shot to express this challenge.

Look, the same both sides!

They really are incredibly made, and these birds, hard to tell the male from the female are very similar. Why King Solomon in all his splendour didn't look like one of these. Bright colours, beautiful shading, Exquisite.
